What is GRO?
Giving
Real Opportunities is an approach that aims to overcome barriers to
learning and employment by providing tailor made learning opportunities
along with support into employment.
Why GRO Islington?
In
2003 a small group of organisations in Islington were considering ways
of working with marginalised learners who were unable to access
existing training or learning. It was felt that there was a need to
provide a supportive 'first step' into learning for some adults.
Courses at The Parent House
The Parent House provides a package of courses
which run alongside and complement other courses such as ESOL and IT
which are run by local colleges. The Parent House aims to
provide Learning Plus Support.
Courses
are short, well-structured and cater for individual learning styles.
We like our courses to respond to the strengths and needs of individual learners. What is more, they are fun and practical.
Each course starts with an
initial needs assessment so the appropriate type and amount of support
can be given to each learner throughout the course.
A project worker is designated to each course. You will be introduced
to them on the first day of your course. This person will be able to
provide 1:1 support whilst you are completing your course and explain
what support is available to you at The Parent House and how to access
it. If your project worker is unable to provide the support you need,
they will refer you to another organisation. Your project worker will
help you complete your individual learning plan (ILP) which will give
you the opportunity to say what you want to achieve and what support
you need. Your project worker will also encourage you to think about
your future options and meet with you at the end of the course to
discuss next steps.
You are welcome to continue to use the support of The Parent
House after you have finished your course (or even if you have
never attended a course)
